This report from Advanced Healthcare Network says hospitals and health systems need to spend more time grooming potential new CEOs from within and have a clear succession plan to deal with the very high turnover (18 percent a year) of health-system CEOs.
The authors cite B.E. Smith’s 2016 Healthcare Trends report, which surveyed 1,200 healthcare leaders, and found that 53 percent planned to find a successor internally and 44 percent would seek experienced or emerging leaders from outside.
