Is Hippocratic Oath outdated?

oath

A fragment of the Hippocratic Oath on Third Century, B.C. papyrus.

Some physicians argue about whether  the Hippocratic Oath should continue to set the ethical standard of patient care for today’s physicians, or should be seen as  an anachronism that ought to be retired.

Hippocrates is often called the father of medicine in Western Civilization. Many experts say the oath attributed to him was written in Ionic Greek, in the late Fifth Century B.C.

In its original form,  the oath requires a new physician to swear, by a number of healing gods, to uphold certain ethical standards. Taking the oath is  a rite of passage for medical doctors  in many countries, although various modernized versions are often used. The central  message remains: “First, do no harm.”
