For-profit Medicaid managers in Iowa call situation ‘catastrophic’

The Des Moines Register reports that the  for-profit companies running Iowa’s Medicaid program have been complaining to state administrators that the program is ”drastically underfunded,” calling the whole situation a “catastrophic experience” for their bottom lines.

One managed-care executive called  Iowa’s recent offer to give the companies an extra $127.7 million in state and federal money this budget year “not acceptable.” He added that without major changes, the privately run Medicaid program could be unsustainable. The Register reported: “None of the three {managed-care} companies has agreed to accept the size of the increase in money they would receive for covering poor and disabled Iowans.”

Which raises the question of why a for-profit company should be allowed to run such an important public service in the first place.
