Physician-leadership development still lags

A recent joint survey by the American Association of Physician Leadership and the Navigant Center for Healthcare Research and Policy Analysis suggests that efforts to more comprehensively develop physician leadership still lag.

For example, 90 percent of physician leaders agree that an understanding  finance  is important in their profession,  but only 47 percent say that their institutions have a formal physician-leadership training program that addresses this.

And at institutions that don’t  have a leadership program yet, 84 percent of respondents said they  didn’t know of plans to launch one.

The survey of 2,030 included medical directors (28 percent), staff physicians (20 percent), chief medical officers (19 percent) and other senior executives.

Developing more comprehensive physician-leadership training programs for physician leaders will be essential for preparing for success as hospitals and health systems become increasingly driven by value-based metrics and risk-sharing arrangements.
