Take a look at this very useful Medscape report on female physician leaders.
Consider that in 1975 there were just over 35,000 female physicians in the United States, by 2012 there were over 321,000. In 2012, women represented 31 percent of all physicians and 45 percent of all residents and fellows.
But women represent less than 20 percent of division chiefs, medical school deans, department chairs, and hospital CEOs.
Medscape surveyed a total of 3,285 female physicians across all specialties to find out about their participation and interest in leadership positions.
