Hospital stops suing poor patients over unpaid bills

Nonprofit Mosaic Life Care, in St. Joseph, Mo., has stopped suing low-income patients over unpaid medical bills. The move follows  NPR and Pro Publica investigations and a congressional probe after complaints about the hospital’s aggressive tactics to collect bills from low-income patients.

The hospital, formerly known as Heartland Regional Medical Center, has now forgiven the debt of thousands of patients, started a financial-assistance program and implemented a “medical debt grace period” for patients with outstanding debts.
