STAT offers five reasons why hospital rankings by the profitable likes of U.S. News & World Report, et al., should be look at with “a grain of salt”. (We’d say the same thing about college rankings!)
They are:
- No matter how objective the metrics, ratings are inherently subjective.
- One bad score, and your rating is shot.
- What’s not in the ratings matters, too.
- Gaming the system.
- The marketing agenda.
