A new study in JAMA suggests benefits of having primary-care physicians care for their regular patients in hospitals. The study found that, while patients cared by their PCPs in hospitals had slightly longer stays in the hospitals than patients cared for by hospitalists, these patients were less likely to die within 30 days than patients cared for by hospitalists.
The study’s authors suggested that care models that integrate PCPs with their patients’ hospital care may “yield substantial benefits in outcomes that are meaningful to patients.”
