Colorado to vote on single-payer plan

Colorado’s San Juan Mountains.

Vermont made a stab at this and then gave up because of the daunting costs feared. Now it’s on to Colorado.

There, voters this November will vote a proposal to enact universal, single-payer health care. Backers hope that if Amendment 69, also called ColoradoCare, is approved, other states will follow suit.

The idea is that ideological gridlock and the power of the insurance companies will continue to prevent universal care from being enacted at the federal level. But the price tag would be very high.

“The way to get here is state by state,” said T.R. Reid, spokesman for ColoradoCare and author of The Healing of America.
