UMass Memorial Health Care, a four-hospital system that is central Massachusetts’s largest healthcare provider, has quit the state’s revamped Medicaid program, which will use the Accountable Care Organization model. 17 organizations will stay in the program, called MassHealth. UMass Memorial will be the only major hospital system on the state not to participate.
UMass Memorial, which will continue to take MassHealth patients, said the “financial risks were too great” in the revamped program. About 27 percent of UMass Memorial’s patients are in MassHealth. It’s worried about the fiscal impact of value-based contracts associated with the Accountable Care Organization model.
