Family physician comprehensiveness lowers costs

MedScape reported that “Comprehensiveness varied widely among family physicians. For instance, only 2% reported providing major surgery, but more than 60% reported caring for newborns. Just 14% billed for home visits and 11.7% for emergency department visits.”

“The inverse relationship between more comprehensiveness and 2011 total Medicare Part A and B costs and hospitalizations per beneficiary held up even after controlling for beneficiary and provider characteristics. The largest range of services was in rural areas, but geographic differences alone did not explain the effect as measured, the authors write.”
